The Catholic Encyclopedia

The Catholic Encyclopedia, proposes to give its readers full and authoritative information on the entire cycle of Catholic interests, action and doctrine. What the Church teaches and has taught; what she has done and is still doing for the highest welfare of mankind; her methods, past and present; her struggles, her triumphs, and the achievements of her members, not only for her own immediate benefit, but for the broadening and deepening of all true science, literature and art — all come within the scope of the Catholic Encyclopedia.

The Encyclopedia bears the imprimatur of the Most Reverend Archbishop under whose jurisdiction it is published. In constituting the Editors the ecclesiastical censors, he has given them a singular proof of his confidence and of his desire to facilitate the publication of the work which he has promoted most effectively by his influence and kindly co-operation.

The Encyclopedia was designed to serve the Roman Catholic Church, concentrating on information related to the Church and explaining matters from the Catholic point of view. It records the accomplishments of Catholics and others in nearly all intellectual and professional pursuits, including artists, educators, poets and scientists. While more limited in focus than other general encyclopedias, it was far broader in scope than previous efforts at comprehensive Catholic encyclopedias. It offers in-depth portrayals of historical and philosophical ideas, persons and events, from a Catholic perspective, including issues that divide Catholicism from Protestantism and other faith communities.

How to build your own Nokia Symbian App with the Ovi App Wizard

Building mobile apps for iOS, that’s what we have been doing for years. With the Divine Office products line and for the Divine Office Catholic Ministry, we have built recently our first Android app and we have been asked to support more and more platforms.

Some people asked for a Nokia app. I don’t think Symbian has any future now: Nokia will migrate to Windows Phone 7 and we are already planning a Divine Office app for that platform, still, Nokia has this Ovi App Wizard that allows you to build an app out of RSS Feeds.

So I decided to give it a try.
It really is a trial and error process: the documentation available is very limited, and their support service isn’t 100% aware of how the resulting apps are supposed to work.

I asked some direct questions: for example, I saw that the entries from the Divine Office feed were truncated. So I asked them if we could have complete stories displayed in the app. Their answer was prompt: basically they said something like whatever you see is what you’ll get and there’s no customization allowed whatsoever (only they said this in a very elegant way).

A few hours later, I realized the issue was on our end, not theirs. So the answer I got was correct in the sense that I could not customize anything, but an intelligent answer would have told me that the wizard will generate an app that will show whatever is in the feed: if the feed contains complete stories, the app will display complete stories. Ok, can’t ask too much to Ovi-Support-Borg-Drones I guess (they all identify themselves as Mr. Ovi Gai).

So we got to work and generate the necessary feed for this app, and since the wizard allows you to add up to 4 feeds, I also have put in twitter, facebook and get satisfaction feeds to the mix.

But let’s get there step by step:

  1. Go to the Ovi App Wizard site and sign up
  2. Edit your company data and logo for the Ovi Store;
  3. Create a new app;
  4. Populate it with the feeds you need;
  5. Customize the color scheme and upload a logo;
  6. Specify a price or an ads network;
  7. Save and submit;

Then, log in to the publisher account (you get links and credentials via email after you are done with the app wizard) and add your banking account data.

That’s basically it. The apps work fine and support a huge number of Nokia devices, ranging form the few-years-old N95 with Symbian S60 to the latest N9.

One issue we had was that the app will cut the feed to the latest 20 entries, so you will want to optimize a dedicated version of your feed to be sure that your mobile users get what they really are looking for.

Surgeworks’ first Android App is the Best Catholic Mobile Application

The long awaited Android version of the Divine Office award-winning mobile app is now available for a one-time purchase price of 14.99 USD on the Google Android Market and on the Amazon Android Appstore.

This app is an opportunity for you to participate in the recitation of the Liturgy of the Hours: the public prayer of the Christian community.

The Divine Office app will automatically update its content while you are running it with an Internet connection. The new Android App is an audio and text version of the official set of daily prayers from the Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Catholic Church (Breviary). It wirelessly downloads several days of prayers at a time, without the need for synchronization or access to a computer.

For clergy required to pray the Liturgy of the Hours daily, or laity who recite the daily prayers to maintain their intimate connection with God, The Divine Office App is designed to make praying more convenient, enjoyable, and simple enough for anyone to use. It automatically downloads the appropriate prayers for each office, every day of the year, including Solemnities, Feasts, and Memorials.

The Divine Office Catholic Ministry uses the current four-volume Liturgy of the Hours with a bias towards the USA calendar. This version is the official prayer book of the Catholic Church, however, it is suitable for those following Eastern Orthodox and Anglican traditions.
